Title: Supporting Users to Building Their Own AI Systems

Professor Compton is an Emeritus Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, in the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). During his twenty years at UNSW, he was Head or Acting Head of CSE for twelve years and Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Engineering for three years and was also a member of the UNSW Council, the governing body of the university for two years. Prior to joining UNSW he worked at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney where he was responsible for Garvan-ES1, one of the first medical expert systems to go into routine clinical use. Experience with maintaining Garvan-ES1 led to his research at UNSW on better ways to build and maintain knowledge-based systems. This has resulted in a family of techniques known as Ripple-Down Rules (RDR) which enable users to incrementally build and maintain their own knowledge bases. At least seven companies, including BM, now provide technology or services based on RDR. One of these, Pacific Knowledge Systems (PKS) provides RDR technology world-wide to enable the production of high-quality diagnostic reports for Chemical Pathology. Chemical pathologists at PKS customer sites have developed over 500 different knowledge-bases, some with tens of thousands of rules. Professor Compton's papers have been cited over 5,000 times.
